Why You’ll Love This Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

  1. Nutrient-Dense: Bone broth provides collagen, amino acids, and essential minerals that support gut health, joint function, and skin elasticity.
  2. Rich and Creamy: The natural gelatin in bone broth and coconut milk add a luxurious creaminess to the drink without the need for dairy or sugar.
  3. Unique Flavor Profile: The savoury flavours in the bone broth actually balance the richness of the cocoa, resulting in a deeply satisfying chocolate flavour.
  4. Perfect for Paleo: This recipe is dairy-free and free of refined sugars, making it a great choice for those following paleo lifestyles.

Ingredients You Need for Bone Broth Hot Chocolate

For each large mug of hot chocolate you will need:

  • 1/2 cup of high-quality bone broth (I like Kettle & Fire – beef or chicken works well)
  • 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk (I like Savoy brand)
  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-natural maple syrup – you can substitute monk fruit or honey
  • Optional toppings: homemade whipped cream (coconut milk + maple syrup)
  • Optional ingredients: I kept it simple here on purpose but feel free to experiment with a 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract, a dash of ground cinnamon, a tablespoon of cacao nibs, a scoop of collagen peptides, or some shaved high-quality dark chocolate. You’re the boss, applesauce!

This recipe is super quick and easy to prepare in under 2 minutes with only 4 ingredients:

  1. Add It All to a Pot: In a small saucepan, combine the bone broth, coconut milk, cocoa powder and maple syrup.
  2. Heat it Up: Place the saucepan over a medium heat and whisk it well until completely smooth and frothy.
  3. Make the Whipped Cream: I add a 1/4 cup of coconut cream and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup to this whipped cream dispenser to make the absolute best homemade dairy-free whipped cream in just a few seconds.
  4. Serve: Pour the bone broth hot chocolate into a mug, add your favourite toppings, and enjoy!

Equipment You Need

You don’t need any fancy tools to whip up the bone broth hot chocolate. Just add all the ingredients to a small pot, place it over a medium heat and whisk it together.

You can transfer the hot chocolate to a blender or blend it with an immersion blender directly in the pot if you like, but I find this step to be unnecessary. As long as you use a good quality bone broth and coconut milk and whisk vigorously, the hot chocolate should be very creamy and frothy without blending.

If you want to make the coconut whipped cream, however, I highly recommend getting a whipped cream dispenser. You will also need to purchase N2O cream chargers separately in order for the dispenser to work.

Bone Broth Hot Chocolate FAQs

Can I Taste the Bone Broth?

Kettle & Fire bone broth has a fairly neutral flavour that will be very hard to taste when mixed into the hot chocolate. However, if you use a homemade bone broth that is very aromatic, it might have a more pronounced flavour. If you’re hesitant, start with a smaller ratio of broth to milk. You can always add more if you like.

Is Bone Broth Hot Chocolate Healthy?

Bone broth adds collagen and essential minerals, while unsweetened cocoa provides antioxidants. It’s a nutrient-packed alternative to sugary hot chocolate.

Is This Recipe Dairy-Free?

Absolutely! I use a full-fat coconut cream but you can substitute your favourite almond milk or any dairy-free milk to keep it paleo and dairy-free.

What Type of Bone Broth Works Best?

Both chicken and beef bone broth work well. I recommend Kettle & Fire.

Make It All Winter Long

This recipe is more than just a trendy drink. It’s a powerful combination of flavour and nutrition that you can enjoy all winter long. It’s also dairy-free and refined sugar-free making it a great choice for anyone looking to indulge without compromising their health and wellness goals.
